What Happened This Week

Five things you need to know that happened this week. In 500 words or less!

1. Terroristic Attack in Paris. Two gunmen shot dead 12 people at the office of French magazine Charlie Hedbo in Paris, France. The attack is being regarded as a militant Islamist attack. Both suspects remain at large and a massive manhunt remains active in Paris. Police believe the suspects claimed to be members of the terrorist group Al-Qaeda. Though this is being regarded as a terroristic attack, reasons for the specific attack on the newspaper are still uncertain.

2. Free Community College. Could community college become free? President Obama has proposed to make community college free with State’s being able to opt in to the subsidies. This could effect as many as 9 million students currently enrolled in community college.

3. The King of Rock and Roll lives on. Elvis Presley’s 80th birthday was celebrated Thursday in Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee. Family members took a significant part of what was dubbed a “Celebration of the King’s life.” The King of Rock and Roll died in 1977.

4. AirAsia Update. Black Box Pings have been detected from Air Asia Flight QZ8501 in the massive search effort that remains under way. The flight carrying 162 people crashed in the Java Sea. Recovery efforts are still underway and continue to be hindered due to horrendous weather.

5. Retail Crisis. JC Penney to close stores and lose employees. The department store will be closing approximately 40 stores, which comprise about 4 percent of the chain’s total stores this year. What’s worse is about 2,250 jobs will be lost. The chain has been suffering according to economic analysts for having too many stores and many fear this will be just the beginning of future closings to come.
